    You should check out some videos on undercoating with Lanolin. Basically there are 2 types. One firms up and the other stays more pasty. It is applied with a special spray gun. Check out Repar Geek for his videos on what to use, what he has tried, where he lives (road salt) and the followup videos one year to I think 5 years later. It should be reapplied if it gets washed off somehow but it protects better than any rubberized or asphalt undercoat. I will do it to my '56 Chevy after I finish restoring it. I also want to do my Wrangler, the TJ is notorious for rusting out the frame.

    what a bear! your on the line now. only thing i would do is think about fish plating the seam on the inside of the un. you have the top open, it should be easy enough to get something in there. good job buddy.

    Hey, its been awhile since ive been on YT. Did a repair on my K1500 frame last fall. Bought a sheet of 11 gauge ($150). Cut the bad stuff out, & fabbed my own version of Safe-t cap. Treated the snot out of everything- so far, so good. Yeah, youre in a position where you gotta go forward.

    Make an ADJUSTABLE frame dolly with sliders and custom frame/pinch weld clamps. It's gonna eat a weekend or even two of designing and making it. Then you have the freedom of removing a car from the lift even if its removed the rear end or engine and cradle. You're gonna love it.

    Yeah that is a tough repair. Assuming you can't buy new rails, I agree with GregsGarage. I would cut it back to about an inch from the top and remove as much of the crap as you can. Treat the crap out of what remains and then cut the other rails off the donor jeep up flush with the top and slip them over the remaining original rails and weld it up solid. My fear would be the donor jeep has the same issue but has not come through yet. Alternatively you could fashion your own rails but a lot more effort. Then weld the stiffeners on to the replaced rails and go with it. Not much else you can do with out getting into the body and a potentially much bigger mess. You are the man Roger. No mater what you do it will be better than new I am sure of that.

    • @MrFireman164
      @MrFireman164 11 днів тому

      @@LakeAndLodgeGarage thanks Mike, the donor jeep is perfect other than being hit in the front but it is rust free, but it is also untouched literally like a new one other than the crash and I keep thinking that would be a perfect jeep to fix and drive outside a salvaged title, so I hate the thought of cutting it up, so making a frame rail might be a way to go, hadn’t considered slipping it over and welding that would make it stronger and keep from having to cut all those welds.

  • @GregsGarage
    @GregsGarage 11 днів тому

    You've got a good plan... The alternative would be to leave the frame in place and make new pieces that are just a thickness of metal larger and just go right over the top. The old crusty stuff would remain, but you'd have a new frame around it... That method gives me a bit of the "ick", but it would leave a solid frame without the hours of cutting and patching.

    Going to be doing a similar seam sealing job on some inner and outer rockers and cab corners on a 07 crew cab. Used panel adhesive and butt welded, People don't seem to realize how much time and fit-up goes into a job like this, then they wonder why it costs so much. Going to use that sealer and some brushable seam sealer after everything is epoxy primed. Nice work and enjoy your videos.

      @@moparnut6286 thanks, I have mixed emotions about all weld thru primer, you can weld it easy enough but it scratches off so easy that I would be afraid to paint over it anywhere other than inner panels, I will take all the red back off the outside as well as the coating that’s on the rocker and epoxy it. So short answer is it’s better than nothing 🤷🏻‍♂️

    After you got everything welded up get some 3 m cavity way it has a 12 inch hose with a 360 degree sprayer on the end that will coat the inside of the rocker's don't use under coating it will hold moisture and rust I been doing this trade 30 years i've seen it all good luck buddy.

  • @RideRevival_Outdoor
    @RideRevival_Outdoor 23 дні тому

    6:45 id blame a lot of that on the moisture collection via condensation. the xjs are horrible for it. the coatings are not designed to have moisture on them for days and months at a time like they tend to see. the moisture will eventually pernitrate because of this. its why boats get gelcoat and not paint. once the moisture gets to the metal. all the rest of what you stated comes into play. salt, rocks hitting it, etc. its a bear.

    Man, I'd clamp a piece of angle under that rocker lip and hammer it to the correct dimension instead of splitting it and welding it back. If you're wanting the radius to be sweet, just hammer out a couple test panels and work the edge of the angle iron into the right shape. I've seen you do stuff that's WAY harder than that!!! Then, just trim that lower edge off, once you have the bend in the right spot.

    • @MrFireman164
      @MrFireman164 Місяць тому

      I will definitely kick that around and will likely do it, splitting and rewelding sounds 🤢
